Code of Ethics

The NZPsS, in conjunction with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists, publishes a Code of Ethics for psychologists in Aotearoa New Zealand. This guides ethical practice and safeguards individual and community wellbeing. It is the Code of Ethics for the entire profession.
However, the NZ Psychologists Board is also developing a Code of Conduct that will, in addition, apply to Registered Psychologists from 1 October 2026. See the NZPB's Code of Conduct.
What is the difference between the Code of Ethics and the Code of Conduct?
The Code of Ethics provides a foundation for the practice of psychology by defining a set of principles and ways of thinking that can be used to guide decision making. Ethical practice is dependent on the context and other factors, so overly prescriptive guidance cannot be provided. Each psychologist needs to decide what is ethical practice by using psychological ethical principles and ethical decision-making processes.
However, there are some ways of acting that psychologists are always obliged to follow to practice ethically. The Code of Conduct provides specific direction about how psychologists should behave in their professional and, in some cases, personal actions.
