Awards & Scholarships

The Society offers the following Awards, Prizes and Scholarship:

2008 Call for Nominations  Call for Nominations

- Hunter Award - established in memory of Sir Thomas Hunter of Victoria University. An award of considerable distinction that recognises excellence in research in psychology. Value $1000, and the recipient is invited to present the Sir Thomas Hunter Lecture at the NZPsS Conference in the year following presentation. Offered biennially to Members.
Applicants must be Members of the Society for at least two years prior to application. Curriculum Vitae should be accompanied by two copies of research published or accepted for publication within the past two years. Applications must include the names of two referees who may be approached by the Awards Committee.

- Public Interest Award - recognises valuable contributions to psychology in the public interest. Value $1000. Offered biennially to Members.


- Jamieson Award in Industrial/Organisational Psychology - recognises the most notable contribution, in the Aotearoa/New Zealand context, to the development or enhancement of I/O Psychology through original research; dissemination of research and/or best practice; the sustained exemplary or innovative practice of I/O psychology; or the organization, supervision and/or mentoring of others. Value $1000. Offered biennially to Members.


- Ballin Award in Clinical Psychology - First offered in 2008, honouring Dame Ann Ballin, clinical psychologist and first female President of NZPsS (1978-79). It will be awarded to a Member who is deemed to have made a notably significant contribution, in the Aotearoa/New Zealand context, to the development or enhancement of Clinical Psychology. This may be through original research; dissemination of research and/or best practice; the sustained exemplary or innovative practice of clinical psychology; or through the professional development, organization, supervision and/or mentoring of others in the field of Clinical Psychology. Value $1000.
The award may be made either (a) on the basis of work or achievements occurring in the period of five years immediately prior to the date of the nomination, or (b) in recognition of the nominee’s longstanding/lifetime achievements in Clinical Psychology. Self-nomination, with supporting statements from two Members, or Nomination by two members with the consent of the nominee, must be accompanied by 2 copies of current CV. Nominations/ applications must make specific reference to the criteria in justifying the nominee's achievements in relation to this award.

- G V Goddard Award - an early career award that recognises excellence in research in the areas of bio-psychology, experimental psychology, and neuropsychology. Value $500. Offered biennially to Members.


- C J Adcock Award - established in memory of Professor Cyril Adcock of Victoria University. Recognises the most valuable and significant contribution in any of the following areas: the philosophy of science; psychological theory; personality; cybernetics; cognition; perception; linguistics; and the use of multivariate statistical techniques. Value $500. Offered biennially to Members.
Applicants must be Members of the Society for at least two years prior to application. Two copies relevant books and papers published or accepted for publication within the last two years should be forwarded. Specialists competent in the area of work of applicants may be consulted by the Awards Committee.

- The President's Scholarship, offered annually to Maori, post-graduate (Masters or higher level Psychology degree) university students, to support the completion of research which is Maori-centred and of use to the Maori community. Current value $2000. Information is circulated through university psychology departments. See information poster online:   President's Scholarship
Closing date 30th June 2008.


- Best Student Conference Paper Prize/s - awarded each year to the Student Subscriber/s who present/s the best paper at the Society's annual conference. Prize value $200 + Conference registration fee refund.
