Psychology in New ZealandRegistrationRegistration as a "Psychologist" in New Zealand is managed by the Ongoing EducationUnder section 40 of the HPCA Act, the Board may set or recognise competence programmes for all psychologists
or groups of psychologists, including cultural competence. Formal academic training is provided by tertiary institutions.
In-service training may be provided by employers.
Professional MembershipGiven the diversity of psychology and the geographic distribution of psychologists in NZ, it is highly recommended that psychologists become members of a professional association. Membership of the NZPsS confers many benefits, including the opportunity to contribute to the development of the profession; to maintain currency of knowledge in chosen specialist areas and keep abreast with developments in other related areas; to network with colleagues; and access to membership services. CareersPsychologists are employed in a wide range of workplaces, and many practise privately as independent contractors and consultants.
