About the NZ Psychological Society

The NZPsS is the premier professional association for psychologists in New Zealand with a history dating back to 1947. Established as a stand-alone incorporated society in 1967, the NZPsS has over 900 Full Members plus 180 student members & subscribers. Through its national office in Wellington, the Society provides representation, services and support for members around New Zealand, and some overseas.

The Society has several primary roles:

  • Representing psychologists to the public, the media and the Government.

  • Providing professional support and development to members.

  • Promoting high standards of ethical and professional practice.

  • Promoting the discipline of psychology as a science.

  • Promoting and supporting biculturalism in the profession.

An elected Executive and Representative Council govern the Society according to the Rules.

As part of its commitment to high ethical standards the NZ Psychological Society developed and retains guardianship of the
Code of Ethics for NZ Psychologists. The Code applies to all members of the Society and all registered psychologists in New Zealand. It presents Principles and Values to which Psychologists should aspire and identifies the implications of these for practice through the inclusion of Practice Implications and associated Comments.
The new Code adopted in 2002 replaced the previous 1986 Code of Ethics
