Institute of Counselling Psychology

I.Couns.Psy is a professional sub-group of the NZ Psychological Society. It has been in existence since September 2003.

The Institute defines Counselling Psychology as:
A psychological speciality that utilises and applies psychological knowledge and research at the individual, group and organisational level. Counselling psychologists enable and empower clients experiencing typical and atypical problems of living to enhance their personal, social, educational and vocational functioning. The speciality embraces a range of approaches including preventative and educational programmes, and acknowledges the importance of phenomenological perspectives as well as the influence of developmental and ecological factors.

The Objects of the Counselling Institute are to:
* Promote high standards of ethical and professional practice by counselling psychologists.
* Advise on accreditation of training courses in counselling psychology to ensure the competence of practitioners.
* Monitor and maintain membership standards to ensure the competence of practising counselling psychologists.
* Promote the discipline of counselling psychology in New Zealand.

Who can Join?
Members of NZPsS may apply to join under one of the following five categories:

* Professional Member (Practitioner): Registered psychologist with demonstrated expertise in, and commitment to, counselling psychology. Practitioner members will have current registration, a regular supervision arrangement, and participate in professional development activities. Supervisors will be asked to report on the applicant's expertise in, and commitment to, counselling psychology.

* Professional Member (Academic): Has demonstrated knowledge and skills in counselling psychology and is actively involved in the teaching and/or research of counselling psychology, or closely allied area.

* Provisional member (Practitioner): A temporary category for an NZPsS member in the process of completing the requirements for Professional Membership of the Institute. Provisional members must have a time-lined professional development plan and an approved supervision arrangement.

Professional and Provisional members have voting rights.

* Associate member: An NZPsS member with an interest in counselling psychology. Limited to 12 months if eligible to be a Professional or Provisional member.

* Student member: Student Subscriber of the Society with an interest in counselling psychology.

Membership Fees
Currently $22.50 annually for all member categories, except Students who pay a once-only joining fee of $10.
